São João de Meriti is a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is located at 22°48'14" south latitude and 43°22'20" west longitude, at an altitude of nineteen meters. The municipality has a population of 440,962 inhabitants according to the 2022 Demographic Census released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, with an estimate of 466,503 inhabitants in 2025.
It was one of the most important districts of Iguaçu (alongside Vila da Estrela) in the 19th century, but only became a municipality in 1947, four years after Duque de Caxias separated from the city of Nova Iguaçu.
It is located in the Baixada Fluminense region, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. It covers an area of 34.838 km².
