Santos is a Brazilian municipality on the coast of the state of São Paulo, in the Southeast Region of the country. It is home to the largest port in Latin America, which is the main driver of the city's economy alongside tourism, fishing and commerce. It ranks fifth among the most important non-capital cities for the Brazilian economy and tenth according to quality of life. The city hosts the executive power of the state of São Paulo every 13 June (the symbolic capital of São Paulo), and is home not only to several higher education institutions but also to the oldest general student body in Brazil, the Centro dos Estudantes de Santos.

Founded in 1546 by Brás Cubas, being one of the oldest cities in the Americas, Santos became a centre of the coffee cycle in the 19th century. In 1922, the Official Coffee Exchange was inaugurated, where the wealth of the coffee market was traded for the country, and which resulted in the present-day Coffee Museum in the Historic Centre, which hosts exhibitions on the journey of the product through Brazil and the city and is decorated with works by the artist Benedito Calixto. Today, Santos has a thriving economy, mainly due to its port complex. According to analyses from 2016, the city was the 33rd richest in the country, with a gross domestic product of 21,954,556.74 reais.
