Petrolina is a Brazilian municipality, the third most populous in the state of Pernambuco. It is located 712 km from the state capital, Recife. In 2025 the IBGE estimated its population at 418,444 inhabitants. It is the main urban centre of the Pernambuco Sertão, the thirteenth largest in the Northeast and the third largest in the interior of the region, and the 65th in Brazil. Petrolina lies on the north bank of the São Francisco River, on the border with the state of Bahia, forming a conurbation with the municipality of Juazeiro (BA). It is part of the Integrated Development Region of the Petrolina and Juazeiro Pole, the largest RIDE in the interior of the Northeast.
Petrolina was founded in 1870. Its region was frequently visited by the Italian Capuchin friar Henrique, who carried out intense missionary preaching in the riverside villages of the São Francisco River. On one of these occasions the friar decided to build a chapel dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Angels, and it was from this construction that population growth occurred in the area where the municipal seat is located. Around the 1980s its first irrigated wineries began to emerge, watered by the waters of the São Francisco, and with them industries related to wine production appeared. Currently, the municipality consists of three districts in addition to its seat, and the seat is subdivided into five regions with several neighbourhoods.
