Foz do Iguaçu is a Brazilian municipality located in the west of the state of Paraná. It is 643 kilometres from the state capital, its territorial area is 617.701 km², of which 61.200 km² lie within the urban perimeter, and its population, according to the 2022 census, is 285,415 inhabitants.

According to an article published by Exame magazine in March 2014, it is the third destination for foreign tourists in the country and the first in the South Region. It is internationally known for the Iguaçu Falls, one of the winners of the contest that chose the 7 Natural Wonders, and for the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant, the second largest in the world in size and the first in power generation, which in 1996 was considered one of the 7 Modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Foz forms a trinational urban region with more than 700,000 inhabitants, also made up of Ciudad del Este in Paraguay and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina, countries with which it shares borders. Iguaçu is an indigenous place name, originally decomposable into y (water) and guazú (large), and the current name arose through the addition of a vowel. Its residents are referred to by the demonym “iguaçuense”.
