Curitiba is the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná. It is located on the First Paraná Plateau, at an altitude of 934 metres, more than 110 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean and 1,386 km south of Brasília, the federal capital. With 1,773,718 inhabitants, it is the most populous municipality in Paraná and in the South Region and the eighth most populous in the country, according to the 2022 Demographic Census carried out by IBGE.

Elevated to the status of a vila in 1693, from a small bandeirante settlement, Curitiba became an important commercial stop with the opening of the tropeiro road between Sorocaba and Viamão, and in 1853 it became the capital of the newly emancipated Province of Paraná. Since then, the city, known for its wide streets, has maintained a rate of urban growth strengthened by the arrival of many European immigrants during the 19th century, mostly Germans, Poles, Ukrainians and Italians, who contributed to its current cultural diversity. Today Curitiba is considered the most developed capital in Brazil, with a low unemployment rate and a diversified industrial park.

Curitiba has undergone several urban plans and laws aimed at controlling its growth, which made it internationally famous for its urban innovations and care for the environment. The greatest of these was in public transport, whose system inspired the TransMilenio, implemented in Bogotá, Colombia.
