Presidente Prudente is a Brazilian municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo, 558 kilometres from the state capital. According to the 2022 census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the municipality had 225,668 inhabitants, making it the 40th most populous municipality in São Paulo state. Its territory covers approximately 561 km².
The municipality was emancipated from Campos Novos do Paranapanema (now Campos Novos Paulista) and Conceição de Monte Alegre (now a district of Paraguaçu Paulista) in the early 1920s. Its name refers to former Brazilian president Prudente de Morais (1841–1902), a lawyer and politician who became the first governor of São Paulo under the Republic (1889–1890).
When it was emancipated, it covered more than fifteen thousand square kilometres. Several municipalities were carved out of its territory: Santo Anastácio (1925), Presidente Venceslau (1926), Rancharia (1935), Martinópolis (1935), Presidente Bernardes (1935), Alfredo Marcondes (1948), Pirapozinho (1948) and Anhumas (1953). Today it is one of the main industrial, cultural and service hubs of western São Paulo, so much so that it has come to be known as the Capital of Western São Paulo.
